Video Marketing in Hospitality and Tourism

We touch on some recent challenges and an opportunity in travel marketing and advertising, especially in light of the exponential growth in mobile devices. FindTripInfo.com will in future focus a significant effort on the development of video vignettes to spotlight destination, activity and accommodation highlights especially for mobile devices.

We’re living in interesting times – in both the literal and euphemistic sense. The lingering effects of the Great Recession, internet mobile technology and the exponential growth in online retail have all impacted our businesses within hospitality and tourism, either directly or indirectly. For some, we can add global climate change, the Arab Spring and emerging tourist markets to the mix. Many recent changes and trends signal much larger changes on the horizon. We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto (The Wizard of Oz).

The implication is that we can no longer fall back on marketing and advertising strategies that worked so well for us just a few short years ago. Markets and technology are ever-changing around us. We’ve learned all about social networks – and more recently experienced the exponential rate at which consumers are adopting mobile technology (tablets and smart phones).

As we develop FindTripInfo.com Travel Guide, we’ve embraced today’s high speed broadband internet, providing generous servings of photos and illustrations on our web pages. We’re also taking care to allow larger (or smaller) text size to be selected by the user when preferred. Like every other website out there, however, we’re challenged by smart phone screen size. This will be a major design focus (no pun intended) in the next 12 months.

The rapid growth in the adoption of mobile technology is also causing a rapid growth in mobile bandwidth and interest in / demand for streaming video presentations. Today’s traveler packs a mobile device and expects to access up-to-date information that is convenient to find and easy to view. That means easy access from the airport, hotel, restaurant, coffee shop or train.

Video vignettes are short, crisp, informative and highly focused videos. They need to display in reasonably high resolution yet stream efficiently, and most importantly, be inexpensive to produce. We invite you to take a look at http://www.findtripinfo.com/pickmestudio.html for examples and further details.

This concept is of course neither rocket science or new. It is however becoming crucially important to include in promotional strategies. B&Bs, hotels, local tours, local activities and attractions can all directly benefit from well designed vignettes. How travelers can easily locate the vignettes for viewing is a topic for a follow-up article.

We welcome your views on this topic, from the perspective of both the traveler and of hospitality and travel service providers.
