10 Great Wine Estates to Visit in South Africa

Ezine Article by Rich J White

Visiting wine estates in the Cape is a fantastic thing to do due to the beautiful scenery and huge variety of experiences possible including museums, wildlife, restaurants, bars and of course wine tasting.

Wine tasting and cellar tours are often free and buying wine direct from the estate is great value.

During your tour of the area don't miss out on a beautiful drive through the Helshoogte Pass (R310) between Boschendal / Pniel and Stellenbosch. It is a stunning valley with wine estates including Zorgvliet, Tokara and Camberly. The Hillcrest Barry Farm is also a great place for farm produce with a small outdoor restaurant.

Zorgvliet Wine Estate, Lodge & Spa

A breathtaking valley setting between mountain peaks. Award winning wines, two fabulous restaurants and a luxurious lodge & spa. Wander around the grounds and taste some wine while taking in the views.

Groot Contantia

Near to Kirstenbosch Gardens and Newlands Cricket Ground this wine estate is the oldest in South Africa and one of the closest to central Cape Town. Historic buildings, museums, wine tasting and food options make this a good place for a visit.

Spier

Where do I start? Just make sure you visit this estate. Wine tasting, lakeside picnics, 3 restaurants, outdoor theatre, African craft markets, Cheetah rehabilitation centre, Birds of Prey centre, 4* accommodation, historic buildings and Moyo with the coolest bar for an afternoon drink. The new 'Eight' restaurant offers organic farm produce from surrounding areas.

Boschendal

Visit one of the oldest wine producers in the New World with a French viticultural heritage dating back to 1685. Their wine is available across the world, so try some now and then go visit the estate. Good for a wonder around the historic buildings. Cellar tours are a bit hit and miss with bus loads of tourists.

Fairview Wine Estate

Just off the N1 motorway from Cape Town. Fantastic cheese made on site, goats to entertain children and fantastic wine. Have a look at their website for more information. Cheese platters at the Goatshed restaurant are fantastic. Also a deli and wine shop so a great place for a wonder around. Very welcoming to all visitors.

Seidelberg

Next door to Fairview, this estate has wine tasting on the lawns, a glass blowing studio and a restaurant under oaks with the most fantastic views. Don't be afraid to simply go for a look around and browse the wonderful glass creations for sale.

Vredenheim

An excellent venue for a picnic with the ducks at their lake with vineyard and mountain views. Very close to Spier Vineyard. A less touristy option.

The Lanzerac

A historic and upmarket wine estate close to the centre of Stellenbosch. Fine dining, spa experiences, luxury hotel, curio shop and many beautiful old buildings to admire.

Vergelegen Estate

A historic wine estate with restaurants and picnic options set in manicured gardens. Located near Somerset West.

Hazendal

"A rare combination of Russian realist paintings, religious icons and Faberge eggs has found an unusual home beside the wine cellar in a chic gallery and jewellery showroom."...so it's not all about the wine!

There are well over a hundred wine estates open to the public in the area. Tourist offices provide maps of various 'wine routes'. For some background information and detailed maps for Stellenbosch use http://www.wineroute.co.za and for Franschhoek http://www.franschhoekwines.co.za.
