Cape Town Beaches - Great Attractions (South Africa)

Cape Town is reputed to have some of the most illustrious beaches in the world. Flamboyant and colorful beach cabins add to the delightful personality of several along the False Bay shore.

Cape Town has earned many Blue Flag Beach honors due to the quality of water and cleanliness.

Ocean temperatures along the western shores (the Atlantic Seaboard) are cold but refreshing for sunbathers during the summer months. Average ocean temperature here is around 13 °C (55 °F), somewhat similar to San Francisco. For warmer ocean bathing, the shores of False Bay (a 30-60 minute drive across the peninsula) offer a more comfortable ocean temperature, averaging 17 °C (63 °F). If you're a surfer, you will however want to wear a wetsuit. The surfing options along the Cape shores are superb.

Since Cape Town is in the Southern Hemisphere, it's a great destination for sea, sand and sunshine during those European and American winter months.

The unique geography of the region causes microclimatic conditions around the shores of the Cape Peninsula. When it's cloudy and windy in one area, it can be sunny and calm in another, just a short distance away across the mountains. This is especially advantageous for beachgoers in early summer when the Cape South Easter is blowing - and for surfers in the winter months, when the North Westerly gales are blowing.
