Food, Wines and Local Culture  CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Town's rich and diverse history over the last three hundred and fifty odd years has left its imprint on the architecture, people, language, culture and on the food. Dutch, Malay, French Huguenot, British and African influences have all contributed to this vibrant region of South Africa, influencing and molding local recipes into a rainbow of cultural flavors that are truly South African.

Culinary or food tourism is defined by the World Food Travel Association (WFTA) as the pursuit of unique and memorable eating and drinking experiences. It is not just about visiting a good restaurant or limited to gourmet food. It involves immersing oneself in the local culture and experiencing the eclectic foods of the region, taking away new cooking skills and recipes to try back home. This philosophy is reflected in our selection of activities and events featured below.

Good Food and Wine Show

Cape Town | held in May each year

One of the highlights on the Cape Town events calendar is Good Food and Wine Show. It opens in the Cape in May each year before traveling on to Durban and Johannesburg. The show is so popular that it attracts master chefs such as Gordon Ramsay.

This is an interactive show where visitors can join classes to learn a new culinary skill. The show presents a number of theatre productions that show visitors how to create latte art and how to create sinful deserts that they can take back home in a goody bag.

Tip: Purchase tickets in advance to avoid lines.
