 South Africa Safaris and Wildlife

South Africa is home to a huge variety of African wildlife, on land and in the ocean. Large tracts of wilderness, coastal and marine resources are proclaimed National Parks and Reserves. South Africa National Parks (SANParks) manages the National Parks within the borders of South Africa, including:

Groenkloof, Kruger National Park, Table Mountain, Marakele, Golden Gate, Camdeboo, Mountain Zebra, Addo Elephant Park, Garden Route National Park (Tsitsikamma, Knysna, & Wilderness), Bontebok, Agulhas, West Coast, Karoo, Namaqua, |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld, Augrabies, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Mapungubwe, Tankwa Karoo and Mokala.

The National Parks provide access to day visitors, although many also provide overnight accommodation options.

A large number of Game Reserves host luxury camps, lodges and locally hosted safari ativities (see our definition, below). With some exceptions, these are not accessible to day visitors. Pilanesberg Game Reserve in South Africa's North West Province is popular with self-drive tourists and day visitors.

Although wildlife can be seen in virtually all parks and game reserves, a select few host Africa's Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo). Kruger National Park is world-renowned and offers a superb Big Five wildlife experience.

Safari - meaning and interpretation
The word safari has its origins in East Africa and is derived from the Swahili word, roughly translated to mean “long journey”. It was popularly used for the long sojourns that hunters would take into the wilderness. In recent times, it’s a term more usually applied by the tourism industry, not for hunting trips but for shorter trips to observe and photograph wildlife. Typically, some of the adventure of the old time safari is preserved. In private game reserves, safari lodges and camps are designed to provide safari ambience. Tented camps in particular provide a sense of being at one with the wilderness. Game drives with local guides may include off-road tracking and early morning and evening sojourns - a time of day when the large mammals are most active.
