In South Africa, we are privileged to have access to great white sharks …
if you know where to go, and when.

Great White SharkThe general public, too, can enjoy great white sharks face-to-face. Observing and diving with these creatures under the correct conditions and guidance is a wonderful experience. Even ‘anti-shark’ people return from an expedition or diving trip with love, and certainly respect, for the great white.

White Shark Projects is without doubt the most successful white shark diving organisation in the world: Working in the unique marine area off the southern Cape coast, our skippers log more contact with great white sharks than anyone else worldwide.

We are proud to be members of or associated with the following:

Recording and research

Dorsal fin of a Great While SharkThe conservation and educational departments are enhanced by a student education programme and white shark expeditions. We are actively involved with the research projects of the South African Shark Conservancy. White Shark Projects has implemented a dorsal fin tracking programme whereby individual pictures of the 3 dorsal fins of Great Whites are taken and fed into a database. This will aid in identifying the population dynamics of the Great White Sharks in the Gansbaai area.

Your day with White Shark Projects

Please note: Due to tides and collection schedules, we can only confirm exact collection times at 16h00 on the day prior to your tour.

The best season for viewing

Dyer Island is a good place to see sharks all year round. So, weather permitting, our tours run every single day. But the prime viewing time is in our winter months when the sharks have a particularly active feeding pattern. The following guide is based on our observations over the past 8 years. Allow for an overlap between seasons.

Peak season: April to October (99% success rate) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
High season: November to December (90 – 99% success rate)
Intermediate season: January to March (80 – 90% success rate)

Water temperatures vary between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius (60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit) during our peak and high season and between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius (50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit) during our intermediate season.
